Ceramic snow foam vs ceramic shampoo vs ceramic detailer: which do you actually need?

Three of our products carry the word ceramic, and the question we get most often is whether you need all of them. The short answer is no. The longer answer is that they do different jobs, and knowing which job is which stops you buying the wrong one.

All three carry SiO₂ — silicon dioxide, the same chemistry a professional ceramic coating is built on, in a form you can apply with a foam cannon, a bucket or a cloth. What differs is where the product is used, how much cleaning it has to do on the way, and therefore how long the ceramic layer it leaves behind lasts.

What is ceramic snow foam?

Ceramic snow foam is a pH-neutral snow foam with SiO₂ in it, so it protects the car as a side effect of washing it. It is the one in the Ceramic Wash System, and for most people it is the one that matters. It goes in the foam cannon at 50ml to two litres of water, covers the car, dwells, and you wash through it with the mitt. The foam does two things at once: it lubricates the contact stage so dirt lifts off rather than being dragged, and it deposits a ceramic layer as it rinses.

Up to six weeks of protection from one wash, building with every wash after. Because it is pH neutral it does not touch whatever protection is already on the car, which is why it can be used every single time without stripping anything. If you own one ceramic product, this is it — you never have to set aside an afternoon to protect the car.

What is ceramic shampoo for?

A bucket wash. Some people prefer one, some cars need one — a car with a week of motorway film needs more agitation than foam alone will give — and some people already have a routine they are not going to change. Ceramic Shampoo is for them. Two capfuls in a bucket, a thick lather, top to bottom with a loaded mitt, and the same principle: a rich, lubricating foam that lifts dirt safely and leaves a ceramic layer behind.

Up to four weeks from a wash. Shorter than the snow foam, because a shampoo has more cleaning to do and less of the product survives to the surface. It rinses clean with no streaks and no second pass, and there are around twenty washes in a 500ml bottle. Pre-wash first, always — a mitt should never touch an unrinsed car, whichever product is in the bucket.

What does a ceramic detailer spray do?

The Ceramic Detailer is the only one of the three that does not wash the car. It goes on after a wash, or between washes, on a clean and cool panel: a light mist, spread with a microfibre, flip the cloth and buff. Seconds per panel, about five minutes for a car.

Because it is applied to a surface that is already clean, almost all of the product goes into the layer rather than the dirt, and the layer lasts longer — up to eight weeks, building with each application. It also gives the most immediate visible result: deep gloss and hard water beading, straight away. It is the product for the weekend the car has to look right, and the top-up that keeps a graphene coating performing between the twice-a-year applications.

Can you use ceramic snow foam, shampoo and detailer together?

Yes. All three are pH neutral and safe on coatings, waxes and sealants. Snow foam over a coating tops it up. Detailer over shampoo adds to it. Nothing here strips anything else — which is more than can be said for most traffic-film removers, and is the reason a car can look freshly cleaned and bead like bare paint an hour later.

Is ceramic snow foam better than normal snow foam? It cleans the same way and leaves protection behind as it rinses, which a standard snow foam does not. Ours is pH neutral, so it is safe on every wash.
